Transmission slipping is one of the clearest early warnings a car can give you. The engine revs rise, but the car does not pull the way it should. It might happen for half a second between gears, or it might be constant under acceleration. Either way, it means the transmission is not transferring all of the engine’s power to the wheels, and the parts doing the slipping are wearing themselves out while it happens.

What slipping actually feels like
Drivers describe slipping in different ways, but the common signs are:
- Revs flare without matching acceleration: You press the accelerator, the engine note rises, and the car catches up a moment later.
- Delayed engagement: You shift from Park to Drive or Reverse and there is a pause, sometimes with a clunk, before the car responds.
- Harsh or unpredictable shifts: Gear changes that used to be smooth now bang in, or the transmission hunts between gears.
- Shudder under light load: A vibration at steady speed, often around 60 to 80 km/h, that disappears when you accelerate harder or back off.
- A burning smell: Overheated transmission fluid has a distinct sharp, burnt smell. This is a sign the fluid has been cooked and the clutches may be wearing.
- A warning light: Many modern vehicles will log a fault code and show a transmission or check engine light when slip is detected electronically.

What causes an automatic to slip
Low or degraded fluid. Automatic transmission fluid does the actual work of transferring drive inside the torque converter and applying the clutch packs. Low fluid from a leak, or fluid that has broken down with age and heat, is the most common starting point for slip. Fluid problems are also the cheapest ones to fix, which is why early attention pays off.
Worn clutch packs. Inside an automatic, sets of friction plates engage each gear. Once they wear past a point, they cannot hold drive under load. Slipping accelerates this wear sharply, because slipping clutches generate heat and heat destroys both the clutches and the fluid.
Torque converter problems. A failing torque converter or its lock-up clutch can produce slip and shudder, particularly at highway speeds.
Valve body and solenoid faults. The valve body directs fluid pressure to the right clutch at the right time. Worn valves or failing solenoids cause delayed, harsh, or missed engagements that feel like slipping even when the clutches themselves are healthy.
Electronic faults. Modern transmissions are computer controlled. A sensor or wiring fault can cause shift behaviour that mimics mechanical slip. This is one reason proper car diagnostics comes before any teardown: a fault code reading and live data check can separate an electronic fault from a mechanical one without opening the transmission.
Why early action saves money
Slipping is self-accelerating. Every slip event generates heat, heat degrades the fluid, degraded fluid protects the clutches less, and worn clutches slip more. A transmission that has been slipping occasionally for a fortnight is in a very different state to one that has been slipping under every acceleration for six months.
Caught early, the fix might be as contained as a service, a leak repair, or a solenoid replacement. Left late, the same vehicle may need clutch packs, a torque converter, or a full rebuild. The symptom looks similar from the driver’s seat. The repair bill does not.
When to stop driving
Park the car and arrange an inspection rather than driving on if:
- The transmission slips on every acceleration, not just occasionally
- There is a strong burnt smell from the fluid
- The vehicle struggles to engage Drive or Reverse at all
- A transmission warning light is on and the car has entered limp mode
- You can see fresh red or brown fluid leaking under the car
Driving a transmission that is actively slipping under load is the fastest way to turn a repairable unit into one that needs replacement.
Checking the fluid is not always simple
On older automatics, checking the fluid level and colour on the dipstick is a reasonable first step: healthy fluid is red and translucent, while dark brown fluid with a burnt smell points to overheating and wear. Many modern transmissions, however, are sealed units with no dipstick, and their level can only be checked properly at the workshop. Some also need specific fluid types, so topping up with the wrong fluid can cause its own problems. If in doubt, leave the fluid alone and get the vehicle inspected.
How the repair decision usually plays out
Once the cause is confirmed, the options follow the same pattern we apply to all major work: fix the smallest thing that genuinely solves the problem.
